About Us

Established in 1997 with a single Citizen Slidinghead lathe, we now operate 17 CNC lathes at our site in Ilkeston, Derbyshire. Our strategy is to heavily invest in the latest modern high speed machinery. We are committed to investing and manufacturing in the UK and producing high quality parts for our clients. We currently have around 30 employees on site at HPC and a further 50 at our sister company Hemlock Engineering Ltd. (www.hemlockltd.co.uk) We generally specialise in the high speed machining of non ferrous metals such as stainless steel, brass, aluminium and plastic though we do have the capability to machine any type of material.

Most of our machines are high performance multi-axis and have powered milling tooling which enable us to machine all the features of a turned component in a single operation including all the milling features. By continually investing in the fastest machine tools we can usually considerably beat cycle times and cost of many of our competitors. We have also significantly invested in fixed head turning lathes to enable us to produce larger diameter components.

A word from our director

As a manufacturer in the UK we have continually faced huge challenges and I don't believe we would still be here if we weren't good at what we do. When I left university in 1991, manufacturing was 19% of the economy. Now it stands at 10% - so in the time I have been in this industry it has virtually halved in size. This makes me wonder why I chose this industry - surely it would have been easier to go into an expanding market - however seeing now what we have achieved - it's a choice I do not regret.

I am even more optimistic about the future because for the first time we are finding that we have the capability to compete on price with the global competition. We have always taken pride in our superior quality and reliable delivery, but now we can usually offer competitive prices too - even for large volumes. I don't think I can ever remember a time before when that was the case. I think this is mainly due to investment in ultra-high-speed automated machinery, as through this we have been able to make vast productivity gains that have simply not been matched by our competitors anywhere in the world.

I am also very proud to have a team of highly experienced, dedicated staff, who have worked for the businesses for many years. It gives me full confidence that if you need machined components, then given the chance, we can deliver.

Meet Our TEAM

Our management team have over 100 years experience in subcontract engineering. They have specialsied in slightly different areas of the business so please read below to make sure you contact the one that most suits your requirements.

Adrian Bettison
General Manager

Adrian has worked for HPC since it was founded in 1997. He brings many years of slidinghead experience to the business. Contact Adrian if you have an enquiry for any type of CNC Turning.

John Bennett
Operations Manager

John is the supervisor of the fixed head turning section bringing many years of expertise to the twin spindle Nakamuras. Speak to John if you have an enquiry regarding larger diameter turning (over 32mm)

Sandra Hart
Assistant & Purchasing Manager

Sandy has worked for HPC for 10 years and deals with Order Processing and Expediting. Speak to her if you have an enquiry about your order or would like to place an order.

Paul Cobb
Managing Director

Paul is the owner of HPC Services and is repsonsible for the overall strategy and financial planning sides of the business.

We can turn parts up to 300mm diameter and down to about 1mm diameter and up to about 500mm long. We have no cranes so that put an upper limit on the weight of a component. Our milling machine machines can cope with anything up to about 900mm (0.9 metres) in length but usually components are much smaller than that unless it is plate type component. Our five axis machines have a machining envelope of about 300mm cubed.
We try to be flexible on lead times so it depends alot on the customer requirements and the complexity of the component. The standard lead time may vary depending our our workload. We might quote you 3-4 weeks but this doesn't mean it cant be beaten if you push us for a quicker turnaround. For example sometimes we have material in stock and can produce parts overnight for next day delivery.
We can manufacture any batch size but the cost per unit will vary accordingly. An economical batch size for a cnc machine would generally be 100 or more. On a slidinghead lathe an economical batch size would be more like 1000 off.
Positionally on a CNC we can generally achieve 0.01mm repeatability (10 microns). For a turned diameter on our slidingheads we can generally achieve the same 10 microns and anything more accurate than this we would send to be ground.
Its entirely up to you. If you only require turned components then its probably better if you order them on HPC Services Ltd. If you are likely to require other milled components, additional operations on components or a mixture of milled and turned components that you want stock holding then its probably best to order them on Hemlock.
Yes but there are certain conditions that we would want to apply. These are negotiable but we would generally want order cover for any machining run we do. We dont mind holding stock so long they are taken in a reasonable and pre agreed time period. There is usually no additional charge for entering a stock holding agreement in fact you should get even better pricing as it allows us to run a bigger batch so make sure to ask for price breaks.
If you are an established business then we do a quick online credit check and usually we are able to give an immediate 30 day credit account up to a certain value. If the credit report is not so good then we would ask that you pay for the first lot of goods pro-forma. Credit terms can generally be be negotiated. We do not currently accept payment by credit cards. All debts should be paid by online bank transfer or by cheque.
Realistically 2-3 microns or a diameter or bore
